07/14/93 Brixton, London

attendance: 3,000 support act: Tribe After Tribe set: Release, Even Flow (song stopped), Blood, Animal, Why Go, Deep, Jeremy, Rearviewmirror, Beast of Burden/(Suck You Dry), Alive, Black, Go, Daughter/(W.M.A.), Porch/(Tearing), Once, Garden, Blues Jam/State of Love and Trust enc 1: Leash, Fuckin' Up, Sonic Reducer enc 2: Indifference notes: 'Even Flow' is stopped until someone in the crowd who is down gets back up. The Rolling Stones' 'Beast of Burden' is covered briefly, with the lyrics modified to "... all I want from you is to make love to me" with Ed clarifying that those are just lyrics and they don't really mean it The encore is introed as "Here are some Journey songs for you" as a review of the previous Finsbury Park show compared PJ to Journey. A solid show.

11/05/93 USA

attendance: 25,000 support act: Weapon of Choice, Eleven and American Music Club soundcheck: Wash, Alone, Yellow Ledbetter set: Release, Go, Animal, Why Go, Deep, Jeremy, Glorified G, Daughter/Improv (It's Time to Realize Your Body with Your Mind), Alive, Rearviewmirror, Improv (Thank You), Blood, Rats, Once, Porch/(Tearing), Fuck Me in the Brain enc: Sonic Reducer, Even Flow, Indifference, Baba O'Riley notes: This show, originally scheduled for the LA area, was problematic with respect to parking and cold temperatures. The unruly crowd was moshing in line during the soundcheck and to PA music! Before PJ started, a roadie sang a hysterical rendition of 'Copa Cabana.' The audience is launching shoes at the stage even before and during the opening acts. In fact, during Eleven's set, a shoe hits Jack Iron's bass drum, he stops the song and says that if he finds out who threw it he would make him pay for the damages (quite pissed). Finally, PJ hits the stage, with the audience behaving outrageously. Prior to 'Deep,' Ed remarks, "Kill your local rapist, but torture him first, then serve him to your enemy for dinner." Later: "The first guy I met today gave me this book and asked if I wanted to know the secret for living forever." Tossing it into the crowd, he says, "Why the fuck would I want to live forever?" During 'Porch,' Ed invites the audience to spit at him. The agitated crowd, continuing to throw stuff onto the stage, leads Ed to comment that "... me and Jeff are going to the front gate and when you exit, we are going to beat the shit out of every barefoot person" and "... throw a gun so I can shoot you." The band eventually plays from behind their amps so they won't be hit by the flying shoes. This audience was awful. The recording of 'Blood' from this show is released on the 'Daughter' single. 'Fuck Me in the Brain' was released later on the third fan club single. The guys deserve a medal for playing this long and this well despite the rowdy crowd.

04/03/94 Atlanta, USA

attendance: 4,500 support act: King's X set: Release, Rearviewmirror, Whipping, Even Flow, Dissident, Why Go, Deep, Jeremy, Glorified G, Daughter/(ABitW-II), Go, Animal, Garden, State of Love and Trust, Black, Alive, Blood, W.M.A., Better Man, Elderly Woman..., Rats, Satan's Bed, Once, Sonic Reducer, Porch/(Androgynous Mind), Indifference notes: Jeff joins Kings' X, playing bass on the Hendrix cover, 'Manic Depression.' King's X vocalist Doug Pinnick and drummer Jerry Gaskill help out during 'W.M.A.' Prior to 'Sonic Reducer,' Ed starts playing drums and Dave announces, "Ladies and gentlemen, Dave Abruzzese!" Jeff chimes in, "Otherwise known as 'Four Feet'." Dave then mocks the crowd's earlier chants of "Eddie, Eddie!" by mumbling "Ed" several times into the mic, before returning to the drum set. Before 'Porch,' Ed says, "I think you won, but I enjoyed the fight," referring to a large banner handed to him, which reads, "Eddie vs. Atlanta." Meanwhile, the band is jamming to the Kiss song, 'Detroit Rock City.' During the long jam during the middle of 'Porch,' Ed dons a Cincinnati Bengals helmet and runs off the stage. From the lighting grid above the stage, he throws down a dummy wearing a similar outfit. The crowd screams, thinking that Ed has fallen, but he reappears, and starts singing again. A snippet of Sonic Youth's 'Androgynous Mind' is intermingled in 'Porch' (and the original played during Ed's DJ show later). The lights are turned up after 'Porch' and at least half of the crowd leaves, missing 'Indifference.' This show was broadcast on radio, as well as Ed's 45-minute DJ session from a van after the show. (The original Monkeywrench Radio?). [Ed's DJ set: Cigarettes (King's X), I Only Play for Money (The Frogs), A Little Story (Daniel Johnson), Joy Without Pleasure (Daniel Johnson), Androgynous Mind (Sonic Youth), In the Blood (Mudhoney), Disconnect (Rollins Band), Baby Drop (Shudder to Think), Let Down Left Out Laughed At (Eleven), Dock of the Bay (PJ w/ Steve Cropper 3/26/94)] At the end of the broadcast, Ed says, "... umm, Pete Townshend and uh (laughs) ... Kurt Cobain. Hope he's alright, please be alright. Thanks for letting us come into your houses and your cars and your ears (laughs) and uh, sorry about the mess. Sorry we left a mess. I'll see you guys later take care... bye."

03/29/94 Bayfront Amphitheater: St. Petersburg, FL USA

support act: King's X set: Rearviewmirror, Whipping, Go, Animal, Dissident, Even Flow, Why Go, Jeremy, Glorified G, Daughter/(W.M.A.), Blood, Last Exit, Black, Alive, Porch/(Dirty Frank) enc 1: Sonic Reducer, Not for You, Elderly Woman..., Rockin' in the Free World enc 2: Indifference enc 3: Throw Your Arms Around Me notes: Ed jokes, "There is a fake in Florida, but this is the real Jeff Ament. If someone comes up to you and says he is Jeff Ament and wants to take your pot or wants to take you to a stripclub, it is probably not him." In a very rare third encore, 'Throw Your Arms Around Me' is introduced as follows: "See, we live in a place where it ain't so sunny. Have you ever been in Seattle? It's just ... this song has a lot to do with summer and I just want to play it here cause it always feels like summer here."

02/05/95 Moore Theater: Seattle, WA (Fan Club show)

attendance: 1,400 set: Jack Irons chant/Last Exit, Spin the Black Circle, Tremor Christ, Corduroy/Not for You, Animal, W.M.A., Lukin, Glorified G, Daughter, Rearviewmirror, Immortality, Blood enc 1: Satan's Bed, Black, Porch, Garden, Go enc 2: Better Man, Let My Love Open the Door notes: Free tickets were mailed to Ten Club members and PJ appeared as the "Piss Bottle Men." Ed speaks of how they just got their vaccinations for the Asian tour, and, while speaking of "pains in the ass," says about the "jumping thing" (moshing and stagediving) that they are "beyond that now." 'Lukin' premiers at this show. A riff from 'Baba O'Riley' is played to open 'RVM.' 'Immortality's' ending is long, lingering and soft. They pause after a ripping 'Go' for Ed to note, "So this is what the fan club looks like ..." 'Let My Love Open the Door,' a Pete Townshend cover, is played for the first time live by the whole band.

03/16/95 Melbourne Australia

attendance: 10,000 support act: The Meanies set: Oceans, Last Exit, Spin the Black Circle, Tremor Christ, Not for You, Elderly Woman..., Corduroy, Animal, Dissident, Even Flow, Deep, Jeremy, Go, Daughter/Improv/W.M.A., Whipping, I Got Id, Rearviewmirror, Alive, Blood, Lukin, I Got You, Immortality, Porch, Sonic Reducer notes: When the crowd rushed the pit, security got rough and were fired after this show. Dave Grohl drums for PJ on 'Sonic Reducer.'

03/17/95 Melbourne Australia

attendance: 10,000 support act: The Meanies set: Release, Last Exit, Spin the Black Circle, Tremor Christ, Corduroy, Not for You/Lukin, Animal, Glorified G, Daughter/(I Don't Know About the Future), State of Love and Trust, Why Go, Jeremy, Whipping, Immortality/Rearviewmirror, Alive, Black, Blood, Porch enc: Go, Even Flow, Better Man, Improv (Words Seem Out of Place), Indifference, Rockin' in the Free World notes: This show was broadcast on the Australian radio station, JJJ. Ed remarks: "It's not just us tonight, we're on the radio. I just thought I'd warn you, you know, if you, if you're s'posed to be at your friend's house spending the night, you weren't allowed to come, don't get your voice on the radio, we don't want you to get in trouble. Ah fuck it, get in trouble!" Later he says, "Fine bunch of mutants we got here We're all mutants up here, too." 'Jeremy' and 'Even Flow' are both sporting a new intros. Ed notes the full moon: "It's really too bad they couldn't open the roof in this place cuz there's a fuckin full moon out there that we're missing ... so if someone's out there listening to us in their car, stick your head out the window.. at home, go to the windows. Things happen in a full moon, good things, bad things, things happen." Ed gives his list of N.W. words/phrases. Reference is made to the poor security the previous night ("... we got the guys from last night the fuck outta here"). Ed acknowledges his wife, Beth: "She's back home, so it's not as if she's going to hear this on the radio, but it's me and Beth's 129 month anniversary today. And I'm going to sing the first line of this famous New Zealand song. This is for her. 'I've got you, and that's all I want.' [sings a couple bars of the Split Enz, 'I Got You']. That's for her. This one's for you." (leading to 'Better Man'). Dave Grohl joins PJ for 'RitFW.'

03/22/95 Brisbane Entertainment Center, Australia

attendance: 15,000 support act: The Meanies set: Oceans, Last Exit, Corduroy/Not for You, Tremor Christ, Animal, Dissident, Go, Daughter/Improv, Deep, Elderly Woman, ?, Jeremy, Footsteps, Rearviewmirror, Immortality, Alive, Blood enc 1: State of Love and Trust, Whipping, I Got You, Better Man/Brisbane rhyme, Porch enc 2: Against the 70s, Sonic Reducer, Indifference notes: The crowd in the pit area picks up the seats and they are carried to the back of the auditorium. People are packed in too tightly and Ed says, "... up here, we got a problem. We gotta clear some room. Please everyone, if you wanna do something for me, as a favor ... everyone take like five steps back ... now on the next song, jump up and down not forward, OK?" and PJ slams into 'RVM.' A full version of the Split Enz 'I Got You' is dedicated to "... the girl who changed her fuckin' name to Pearl Jam." Mike gets wild and creative during an extended 'Porch' jam and Ed wraps up the song by repeating "I'm happy, I hope you're happy, too ..." a couple of times. 'Against the 70s' is introduced as a Mike Watt song (unplayed at a PJ concert before or since), with Dave Grohl joining PJ on drums and staying for a rocked out version of 'Sonic Reducer.' Great setlist and wonderful versions of songs.

07/11/95 Soldier Field: Chicago, USA

attendance: 47 ,000 support act: Otis Rush and Bad Religion set: Release, Go, Last Exit, Spin the Black Circle, Tremor Christ, Corduroy, Whipping, I Got Id, Dissident, Even Flow, Improv/Sick o' Pussies, Deep, Jeremy, Glorified G, Daughter/(Falling Down)/(The Real Me)/(W.M.A.)/(ABitW-II), Animal, Habit, Jam/Lukin, Not for You, Little Wing (teaser), Elderly Woman..., Immortality, Alive, Porch enc 1: Everyday People, Let My Love Open the Door, Better Man, Rearviewmirror, Black, Blood enc 2: Yellow Ledbetter notes: First night Monkeywrench broadcast the show through the radio. The crowd is pumped, with people crowdsurfing during Otis Rush's set! Incredible setlist. 'Black' lyrics are altered from "sun" to "moon" and Ed gestures to the full moon above the stadium. Ed destroys his black Telecaster with the bumpersticker worded, "Skateboarding is not a crime." Producer Brendan O'Brien joins the band on keyboard for a surprising 'Everyday People' (a Sly and the Family Stone song) and then 'Let My Love Open the Door.' First lightning and later, fireworks, filled the sky this night. Amazing setlist and performance.

11/01/95 Delta Center : Salt Lake City, UT (missing last two songs - Porch and Sonic Reducer)

attendance: 9,000 set: Go, Animal, Last Exit, Spin the Black Circle, Tremor Christ, Corduroy, Not for You, Lukin, Improv, Elderly Woman..., Deep, Dissident, Daughter/Pulled Up, Even Flow, Rearviewmirror, I Got Id, Whipping, Immortality, Alive, Black, Blood enc: Red Mosquito, Better Man, Leaving Here, Footsteps, Porch notes: True to their word, PJ returned to Salt Lake City after the previous rain-out and played "twice as long," playing two shows. Ed comments to this effect after 'Tremor Christ:' "I believe we've met before. We're gonna make good on our promise." Monkeywrench Radio broadcast this show. Ed's introduces 'Even Flow' as a song they "... learned off an old '50s jukebox." 'Red Mosquito' is a new song. 'Leaving Here' has an interesting intro.

09/14/96 The Showbox: Seattle, WA [105m] (I haven't listened to this yet)

attendance: 800 support act: Gus set: Sometimes, Hail Hail, Who You Are, In My Tree, Habit, Present Tense, Red Mosquito, Mankind, Off He Goes, Animal, Last Exit, Even Flow, Tremor Christ, Not for You, Immortality, Whipping, I Got Id, Leaving Here enc: Wash, Go, Dissident, Alive, Around the Bend notes: A "not so surprise" warm-up show. With a ticket sales announcement leaked prematurely by KNDD, many disappointed fans were left out in the cold (rain). Hoping to hear just a song or two from outside, fans put up with mean spirited Showbox staffers' harrassment and scalpers offering inflated tickets. For the lucky ones who gained entrance, here's how it went: Ed opens the show with, "Good evening. Welcome to the REM record release party. Welcome to the Pearl Jam reunion tour. Let me just clarify that we play more than Mudhoney. Have you heard the new record? Well, you're about to again." Stone prefaces a rather rough version of 'Mankind' with "All right ... get ready," and Ed says, "This is Stone's song and it's my favorite." Before a somewhat rushed version of 'Off He Goes,' Ed says, "This song's either about me or my roommate. I haven't figured it out yet." Next, Ed announces, "This next part of the show is what we call the 'human jukebox'" and they slam into 'Animal.' Mike really lets go during 'Evenflow.' Ed slips a snippet from Neil Young's 'Cinnamon Girl' into 'I Got Id.' 'Wash' is a very cool surprise, unplayed since the '94 Bridge Benefit. Ed hints a bit at Bowie's "C-C-C-C-Changes" before breaking into 'Go.' Before the lovely closing 'Around the Bend,' Ed chats, "It was almost worth leaving the house for this. If I came to this show, I'd probably just stay home Monday night ... cuz we were nervous tonight and so we played ... well, like now we're gonna be cocky and we're gonna suck. I can just feel it ..." [editor's note: no, ed ... you all didn't suck. the equipment was the problem :) ]

09/16/96 Key Arena: Seattle, WA (INCOMPLETE - ONLY HAS 1ST 15 SONGS)

attendance: 13,500 support act: The Fastbacks soundcheck: Long Road, Better Man, Who You Are, In My Tree, Present Tense, Red Mosquito, Corduroy set: Long Road, Hail Hail, Who You Are, Animal, Last Exit, In My Tree, Habit, Not For You, Daughter, Dissident, Even Flow, Tremor Christ, Go, Lukin, Whipping, Corduroy, Immortality, Jeremy, Black, Red Mosquito, Alive enc 1: Off He Goes, Mankind, Rearviewmirror, Leaving Here enc 2: Yellow Ledbetter notes: The show is a technical nightmare, with microphones, guitars and lights all failing at multiple times throughout the show. Scratching the setlist after 'Who You Are,' Ed tries guiding the band through the more familiar waters of older songs. Even Stone's guitar fails during 'Mankind' with Scully trying desperately to change out his equipment while Stone continues strumming and singing his heart out, appearing to be oblivious to the problems. Stone is having a blast, Jack has found his drumming groove with PJ now, Jeff is smiling and laughing during most of the show, as is Mike, although he never gets into any of his usually fantastic solos (although he tosses in a 'Sympathy for the Devil' riff just before 'In My Tree' and 'River of Deceit' before 'Daughter'), and Ed basically saves the show by keeping the techs and other band members functioning. His voice is clean (though the sound is poor) and he is playing guitar more often and more skillfully than the '95 shows. Ed tosses out a funny little "mou mou" soundcheck after 'Daughter' when changing microphones

02/21/98 Alexander M. Baldwin Amphitheatre: Maui, HI [100m] (I haven't listened to this yet)

attendance: 5,000 support act: Mudhoney set: Do the Evolution, Animal, Hail Hail, Brain of J, Dissident, Faithfull, In My Tree, Wishlist, Off He Goes, Corduroy, Given to Fly, Even Flow, Daughter/(Noise of Carpet), MFC, Lukin, Immortality, Alive enc: I Got ID, Better Man/(Save it for Later), Around the Bend, State of Love and Trust notes: The crowd tonight is more "friendly" moshy, and the band is totally into it and so is the crowd. From the slamming version of 'DTE' leading to 'Animal' to the final, awesome 'State' (I was holding on for dear life when they played this!), this show is perfection. Eddie is in a "great, great" mode and Mike is totally out of control, his eyes closed and face turned upward during 'In My Tree.' Jeff plays part of the show without a hat (*gasp!*) when it is blown off by the wind. Oh and Eddie gave Caryn his pick from the stage.

03/05/98 Melbourne, Australia

support act: Shudder to Think set: Release, Brain of J, Animal, Faithfull, In My Tree, I Got ID, Corduroy, Wishlist, Even Flow, Spin the Black Circle, Daughter/(Pebbles), Given to Fly, Hail Hail, MFC, (Crazy Mary!)/, Elderly Woman, Off He Goes, State of Love and Trust, Do the Evolution, Alive enc 1: Go, Black, Rearviewmirror, Immortality enc 2: Indifference, Porch notes: The show was broadcast on the radio throughout Australia, and on the internet in real time on JJJ. As is typically the case, the shows get better on second or third nights, and PJ's third show in Melbourne is tremendous. Ed slips in a tribute to the late Michael Hutchence (of INXS) during 'In My Tree' ("I'm so high I hold just one breath, give it to INXS, just like my innocence"). Some guitar chords from Midnight Oil's 'Beds are Burning' lead to a wonderful version of 'Corduroy,' which includes the little stop/start thing during the bridge towards the end. Ed's wonderful baritone comes through on 'Wishlist' and the "Camaro" line is changed to "I wish I was the full moon shining off your bulldozer's hood," plus "I wish I was the sound, of 50 million hands upraised for Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan," and "I wish I was lucky man ... well I guess that I am ... I wish I could share with my friends, oh how many things that I have." 'Even Flow' again awesome, featuring really extended soloing from Mike; very prolific and a manic version of 'StBC' (dedicated to "... all those who work at Triple J and the guys who work at PBS") The 'Daughter' outtro/improv ("poor little girl screaming traffic in her hair ...") is a Shudder to Think song titled 'Pebbles.' A couple of verses from 'Crazy Mary' lead to 'Elderly Woman.' 'Porch' leads off as the slower version (like Bridge '96), but later speeds into the more familiar, rocked out version.
